How to Improve Radio Range Without Buying New Equipment
One of the most common issues I get asked about is poor radio range. The first instinct is usually to replace the radios, but in many cases, that isn’t necessary.
After years working with radio systems, I’ve seen many situations where simple adjustments can significantly improve performance without spending money on new equipment.
Understand Your Environment
The biggest factor affecting radio performance is the environment. Buildings, terrain, and interference all play a role in how far your radios can communicate.
Before making changes, it’s important to understand where communication is failing and why.
Simple Ways to Improve Range
1. Positioning Matters
Holding a radio at waist level reduces its effectiveness. Keeping the radio higher, ideally near head height, improves signal transmission.
2. Reduce Obstructions
Walls, metal structures, and machinery can block signals. Moving just a few metres or changing position can make a noticeable difference.
3. Use the Right Channel Setup
Poor programming or incorrect channel settings can impact performance. Ensuring radios are properly configured is essential.
4. Upgrade Antennas
In some cases, a better antenna can improve signal strength without changing the radio itself.
5. Check for Interference
Licence-free radios are particularly prone to interference. Moving to a quieter channel or switching to licensed radios can help.
6. Press, Pause & Speak
Giving the radios time to connect, recieve the signal and lift the squelch for you to hear. Alot of people clip their calls by talking instantly and not allowing the radios to connect. Waiting a extra few seconds after the PTT Button is pressed, makes all the difference to the receiving radios.
When You Do Need to Upgrade
If you’ve tried the above and still have issues, it may be time to look at:
- Higher power licensed radios
- Digital systems
- Repeaters for large sites
My Advice
Always try to optimise what you already have before replacing equipment. In many cases, small changes can deliver big improvements.
